Road bike tires come in many different varieties. There is the manufacture to consider….some are better than others. You need to determine what you are buying the tires for….racing or training. Depending on what you are going to use the tires for…. will depend on what you look for. Racing tires come in different widths for the front and back.

For training tires there is no difference…you don’t need there to be. To get the appropriate tires you also need to consider the weather conditions you encounter most…or the variety of weather. If you live where it rains quite a bit you will want a good set of rain, or all season tires. If you live in sunny climates it does not matter as much which tires you get. You will want to get some tire liners if you commute a lot or if you wish to fix fewer flats during training rides. There are tires that are supposed to be puncture resistant…some people swear by them while others curse them. You will have to find out for yourself if you do not already know. Some of the better manufacturers of road bike tires are:

Michelin, Vittoria, Hutchinson and Continental

These manufactures seem to do the best at producing a quality product on a continual basis.

  • Both Michelin and Vittoria have a good all weather tires. You will want to choose these brands for wetter conditions.
  • For you drier weather people, Continental has some good tires to choose from.
  • You should always look for tires with harder rubber in the center and softer side rubber. This allows you better cornering and less rolling resistance…an all around good combination.

So decide what your tire need is and go find some to fit those needs. See you on the streets….enjoying the ride!
