Types of Bike Locks

If you depend on your bike for commuting to work, getting around town, or personal recreation, it is important to keep your bike safe from thieves. In most cities across America, it is not uncommon for you to lose at least one bike in your life or at least have known someone who has had their bike stolen.
As common as this is, it can be easily avoided. Many people feel that they can trust the world and do not see the need to lock their bikes up, especially if they keep them outside during the work day or even at night. This is the easiest way for thieves to get away with their crime and then make money off you naivety. Another way is to use a bike lock that was not designed to keep away serious thieves and are therefore easy to cut through and make a swift get away.
Do yourself a favor and use one of the following type locks:
- D-Locks and U-Locks:
When looking at the store, the best way to identify a D-lock and U-lock is by looking at the shapes. They have a straight edge as the lock, connected by a “u” to go around the bike. These are one of the most secure types of locks, because thieves cannot use bolt cutters to destroy the lock. One must lock the bike to an external point, because they could just lift the entire bike away if not secure. - Chain and Cable Locks:
These types of locks are not a secure as the U-shaped locks. These types of lock can often be cut through easily and quickly, without much noise or notice, letting them get away with your bike. However, new materials are being used to make cable locks less susceptible to cutting-there will be more advances in this technology in the future, as this type of lock is easier to carry around and bend around all types of secure objects. - Wheel Lock:
Like D-locks and U-locks, these type of lock does not prevent a thief from carrying your bike away. However, it does prevent a fast get away by them if they try to ride the bike. This lock prevents them from hopping on and getting away, so they will have to be very strong or have a good get-away plan.
