Beach cruisers have really become the in thing for travel from class to class on large campuses. Especially at the larger more rural campuses, going from dorm to class to different buildings can be a taxing ordeal. This is why the beach cruiser bike has become a favorite on campus. It’s comfortable seat and upright riding position makes it easy to ride carrying a backpack. There are even the options of installing a front wicker basket, or a back book rack. Some of the bikes are beautiful and well-designed. You know the type in day-glo coat of paint on top of paint. There’s plenty of room for even little elf carictatures especially if the body of the bike has been widened and distorted. A 20-year old male student rode his orange day glo bike with pride. It was something he had learned to design when he was in high school, in hia old Chicano neighborhood, but now proudly displayed at the University of San Diego. He carefully locked his beach cruiser outside his lecture hall as he thought of all the work he had put into it. The wide handle bars gave him a chance to show off his biceps in short sleeves or even better a sleeveless top and cutoffs, wearing sandals.

One day when coming out of Biology class, this young man named Juan said hello to a fellow student also riding a beach cruiser bike. Her bike was a plain factory model, but in one of the new amazing colors in this case bright banana yellow. Either the young lady herself, or her bright yellow bike got the attention of Juan, and he asked her what class she was taking. She replied that her name was Jane, and that she had seen him before, although he had not previously noticed her in the huge biology lecture hall. Jane was so astonished by the twisted handle bars and the intricate art work of Juan’s beach cruiser that she easily slipped into conversation with him. When Juan found out that she was doing well on her Biology exams, he immediately requested that they get together for a bike ride on Saturday, and they could take their school books and review for the next test.

On Saturday morning, Juan was ready to meet up with Jane at her dorm early. She had packed a picnic lunch of bread and cheese, and some soft drinks, and carefully packed it and put it in her white wicker basket. Rob didn’t have a basket on his designer cruiser, but he packed some blankets, and a radio in his black backpack. Jane also had her backpack on, but all it contained was her Biology texts and notebook, so that she could go over the school work, which after all was the pretext for this meeting. They were both quite comfortable carrying these loads to a secluded spot near the beach, where they were not likely to be disturbed.
